China harbours one of the world's oldest civilizations, and has recently been split into two political entities due to the last Chinese Civil War. The People's Republic of China (PRC) controls mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau and is more commonly known as China. The Republic of China (ROC) controls many islands, including Taiwan, and as a result is known as Taiwan.
China is considered an emerging superpower of the world due in part to its vast population, growing economy and its investments in research and development projects. The country borders fourteen countries in total: Vietnam, Laos, Burma, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, and finally North Korea.
Geography:
China 's terrain is made up of mostly plateaus and mountains in the West and lower lands in the East.the South hills and low mountain ranges prevail while the North is mostly made up of grasslands, although in some parts of the North-West there are arid deserts, such as the Takla-Makan and the Gobi Desert. Arable land lies along each side of the two great rivers Huang He and Yangtze.
The Himalayas are located in the South of the country and contain Mount Everest , home to the highest point on the planet Earth. Southern China experiences a subtropical climate, which makes for hot summers and mild winters. Northern China 's climate is greatly varied - there are daytime temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius during the Summer but during the Winter Arctic temperatures take over. The centre of China enjoys a temperate continental climate consisting of hot summers and cold winters.
Government:
China is ruled under the Constitution of the People's Republic of China and is run by the Communist Party of China (CPC) which the Constitution grants power. Other political parties do take part in the People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress, but often it is the CPC who has more power. The CPC has control over government appointments which generally means the party wins by default if there is not major opposition.
A President and a Premier oversee the running of the state and the government.
Foreign Relations:
China is one of five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. At the time of joining the council the People's Republic of China was not in charge of the country, but it is still recognized as one of the founding members of the UN. China is also a member of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and a founding member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Transport:
Since the late 1990s the People's Republic of China have been exercising efforts to link the entire nation together through expressways known as the National Trunk Highway System (NTHS). However, long distance travelling remains dominated by railways and charter bus systems.
Many cities, including Beijing and Shanghai have expanding networks of subway systems and many other cities are following suit.
