Activities
The resort is a long narrow island with kilometers of sandy beaches. It is separated from the mainland by a wide canal, formed by the rivers that empty into the Atlantic Ocean. Vegetation on the island indulges visitor`s eyes. Palm trees on the beach are plentiful and as tall as buildings. The abundant natural landscape surrounding the canal is impressive. The resort is located on the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica in the province of Limon. Upon reaching Limon, you are immediately surrounded by the unique Caribbean atmosphere reflected in its people, food, architecture and customs. The scenery maintains its`tropicl green color all year long. The majority of the land on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is dedicated as natural preserves protecting the ecological bio-diverity. Its beaches are some of the best in Costa Rica and the warm clear waters of the Caribbean are both inviting and picturesque.
Canopy Tours
Harness up and swing through the trees and enjoy incredible views on a series of zip lines suspended between the tall trees of the tropical forest.
Fishing
The resort is a fishermans paradise, you are surrounded by different varieties of fish such as Sailfish, Tuna, Marlin and much more. Due to the relative virgin area, the fish come in all sizes, including world record breaking measurements. Additionally, an International Tarpon and Snook Championship is hosted every year at Barra del Colorado, 50 miles north of the resort, offering some of the best Snook and Tarpon fishing in the world. The Tarpon average about 80 pounds and Snook are just as sizable. You`ll find Fat Snook, Billfish, Wahoo, Dorado, Tripletail, Kingfish, Mackerel, Barracuda and Jack Crevalle.
Scuba Diving
A world class diving site: Cahuita National Park is 1 hour south by boat or by car, a 1.5 hour drive. It boasts incredible views of exotic coral formations. There are also many other dive sites on the Caribbean coastline showcasing an underwater life diverse in color, species and natural coral formations. Maritime life unique to this region abounds. Divers will see massive schools of fish, rays, jacks, giant mantas, sea turtles, white tip sharks, dolphins and more.
Rainforests
The resort is surrounded by a tropical lowland rainfrest, the type of rainforest that provides the best environment for the most diversity of life, due to its consistent weather throughout the year. Lowland rainforests contain the tallest trees. The landscape of the resorts canal include many species of vegetation, typical to the Matina Forest Reserve, located on the coast, only 20 minutes north by boat and more importantly typical of the famous Canales de Toruguero National Park, 15 minutes further north.
Aerial Trams
In just less than an hour driving inland from the resort you will encounter the Braulio Carrillo and Amistad Caribe National Parks with mountain rainforests, the so called `cloud forests` where you will enjoy an Aerial tram that will take you approximately 650 feet, above sea level. It is home to at least 500 species of vertebrates and 3000 species of plants. The views are spectacular with jurassic Park like vegetation and dinosaur memories.
Coastal Parks
Home to a rich diversity of lora and fauna, this area has been largely set aside for the attractive national parks, wildlife refuges and forest reserves. Such as Tortuguero and Barra del Colorado on the northern coast, Matina on the central coast and Cahuita and Gandoca Manzanillo on the southern coast.
Matina Forest Reserve
Located 20 minutes north of the resort by boat. It is an area on the coast between the mouths of the Pacuare and Matina rivers that protect a rare Primary Forest where sea turtles come to nest on the beach.
Cahuita National Park
Located 1 hour south of the resort. The main attraction is its white beaches, calm clear sea and coral reefs. Cahuita is also a laying site for rare species of sea turtles. The park offers excellent dive sites, including the remains of a slave trade ship, shipwrecked during the second half of the eighteenth century.
Gandoca-Manzanillo National Park
Located 1.5 hours by car or 2 hours by boat. The park is a wildlife refuge on the coast consisting of several emerged coral reefs and white sand beaches. The coral reefs extende outwards over 650 feet and the white sand beaches have few waves due to the shallowness of the coast. Varied bird life and other species under the threat of extinction are protected here. The landscape is mostly grassland and forest.
Canales de Tortuguero National Park
Located 35 minutes north by boat. Alongside the Caribbean Sea, a natural network of beautiful channels and navigable lagoons cross the park fromo southeast to northwest. It is one of the most important laying sites for the green turtles and home to another seven species of turtles that co-exist with the threatened West Indian manatee. Excursions take visitors deep into the channels where eco lodges can provide comfortable accommodations for the ones who want to stay overnight.
Barra Colorado National Refuge
Located 2.5 hours north by boat or 30 minutes by air. This refuge next to Tortuguero hosts river fishing, river explorations and eco lodges, all devoted to explore nature. Annual World Snook and Tarpon Fishing Championships are held nearby, where world records have been broken.
