Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a landlocked country located in Central Europe . Poland sits to the North, Germany to the West, Austria to the South and Slovakia to the East.

The Capital city of the Czech Republic is Prague and is well known for its beauty which attracts many tourists every year. Some nicknames are for this city are "the golden city" and the "city of a hundred spires".

Geography:

Bohemia , in the West, consists of a basin surrounded by low mountains and this trend continues into the East where mostly hills can be found. The terrain is covered in forests rich with wildlife. Water from the landlocked Czech Republic flows into three seas: the North, Baltic and Black Seas .

The climate of the Czech Republic is a temperate, continental climate which boasts relatively hot, rainy summers and cold, snowy winters. The coldest month of the year is January, followed by February and December. Usually during these periods there is snow in major cities and lowlands. On the other side of the temperature scale, July is usually the hottest month, followed by August and June.

Government:

The Czech Republic runs under a multi-party parliamentary representative democracy where the Prime Minister is the Head of Government. The Head of State is the President who is elected by Parliament for a five year term at a maximum of two consecutive terms.

The Bicameral Parliament contains the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The Chamber of Deputies contains 200 members who are all elected for a four year term by proportional representation. The Senate contains 81 members who serve six year terms. Every even year a third of the Senate is renewed in two-round runoff voting.

Foreign Relations:

The Czech Republic is well known for promoting human rights initiatives. In fact, the Czech foreign ministry has an entire unit devoted to the protection and aid of dissidents in other countries.
