Praia, Cape Verde, 27 Oct - US airline Delta Airlines is due to launch flights from Atlanta (Georgia) to Sal, Cape Verde, in the first quarter of 2010, said the US ambassador to Cape Verde, Marianne Myles.
The announcement was made during a meeting that brought together the Cape Verdean minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Manuel Inocêncio, and delegations of the Cape Verdean Civil Aviation Agency (AAC) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the United States, which recently positively assessed the Amílcar Cabral international airport.
The start of flight operations was scheduled for last September, but security delays made it impossible to launch Delta Airlines' flights to Sal, from where it will fly on to several West African capitals - Dakar (Senegal), Freetown (Liberia), Bamako (Mali) and to Lagos or Abuja (Nigeria).-
The link may also use Sal as a flight transfer point to Luanda (Angola), although this has yet to be defined, despite the fact it was considered in February this year.
At the meeting, the TSA and AAC also signed a memorandum of understanding to boost security operations between the United States and Cape Verde. (macauhub)
